Overview
Our team developed a 6-Axis CNC Controller designed specifically to meet the needs of our in-house CNC operations. Built to bridge the gap between hobby-level and professional-grade control, this controller enables multi-axis precision for machining projects within our company. As we expand our capabilities in CNC manufacturing, we wanted a reliable, flexible controller that could be fully customized to suit our machines and requirements—allowing us to manage everything from design to final production without relying on third-party solutions.
Project Background
The decision to build our own controller stemmed from our CNC manufacturing division’s need for flexible, reliable machine control for various custom machining projects. Existing controllers on the market either lacked the necessary flexibility for multi-axis work or didn’t offer the level of customization we required for future scaling. By creating this controller, we gained full control over the technology, reduced dependency on external suppliers, and strengthened our capabilities to handle precise CNC tasks internally.
Key Features
- 6-Axis Control: Allows independent management of up to six axes, essential for complex machining requirements across different materials and geometries.
- Smooth Stepper Motor Management: Provides accurate and stable control over stepper motors, delivering precise, repeatable movements necessary for CNC operations.
- Spindle and Peripheral Control: Integrated spindle management supports variable speed adjustments, allowing for flexible setups according to project needs.
- Wi-Fi Connectivity: Enables remote control and easy integration with other in-house systems, making operation more efficient.
- Customizable Firmware: Supports open-source firmware, providing options for easy adjustments and future upgrades without requiring extensive rewiring or modifications.
Development Process
We created several iterations of the hardware design through in-house prototyping. Each version was tested on three CNC machines to evaluate performance and compatibility before finalizing the controller for production. This rigorous testing ensured that the final design met our operational requirements effectively.
Outcome
The 6-Axis CNC Controller has become a critical part of our in-house CNC setup, allowing us to take on diverse projects with greater flexibility. It’s robust enough to handle our semi-professional applications while offering a fully customizable platform for future growth. This project reinforces our commitment to building our manufacturing infrastructure and handling every phase of production internally.
